The two sided Story of the Pussy Bow

by Wolf and Whistle in

Nothing says soft and feminine like a lovely, billowy bow tied just underneath the neckline of a blouse, but did you know that the pussy bow blouse is also linked to the powerful feminist movement throughout the professional world in the 1970's?

Although this bow detail does add a beautiful feminine touch to a blouse or dress, the pussy bow was one of the ways that professional women in the 70's integrated an ownership of their personal style into their workplace. Meg Whitman, CEO of Hewlett-Packard, explained as one of the first women to enter corporate workforce, that there were no established rules on how to dress as a business women and so many women used bows and blouses to reinterpret standards of dress for men in the workforce:

"We used to dress in suits with a skirt and a jacket with button-down shirts and a little bow tie, because that was sort of our interpretation of the man's tie. It was our attempt to be feminine but fit into what was then a male world"

The name of the 'pussy-bow' blouse is also a two sided story: Some believe the name refers to an innocent inspiration of a bow a pussycat might wear around its neck in the 20th century, while others believe the name developed into a cheeky euphemism for certain female parts, as it came to represent an equivalent for a 'girlie tie' in the 70's work world.

We like to embrace both the dainty & badass professional styles of the pussy-bow at Wolf and Whistle. Our teal Bow Front Shirt Dress is the perfect way to look sophisticated at work with a stylish, feminine touch.
